Ecaterina Vrana

Ecaterina Vrana was a Romanian painter whose work occupies a distinctive place in contemporary Romanian art through its intensely autobiographical character, emotional depth, and symbolic visual language. Born in Constanța, she studied painting at the Academy of Arts in Bucharest under the guidance of Professor Sorin Ilfoveanu, developing a practice that merged figuration, text, memory, and personal mythology.

Throughout her career, Vrana created deeply personal works that explored themes such as vulnerability, illness, identity, family, loss, and resilience. Her paintings often function as visual diary fragments, where intimate narratives are transformed into complex compositions populated by recurring symbols, self-portraits, and dreamlike imagery. Her artistic language balances raw emotional intensity with irony, tenderness, and remarkable narrative force.

Over the years, she exhibited extensively in Romania and abroad, with notable exhibitions including A Woman Without Secrets at Galeria Nicodim in Bucharest, The Scythe Was a Chick at the Constanța Art Museum, and Funeraria at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest. Her works are held in public and private collections across Romania, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Hungary, and the United States.

Today, Ecaterina Vrana is regarded as one of the most powerful and singular voices of her generation, leaving behind a body of work that continues to resonate through its honesty, emotional intelligence, and profound exploration of the human condition.
