Vasile Grigore

Vasile Grigore was a Romanian painter, draughtsman, professor, and art collector, whose career combined artistic creation with an important contribution to Romanian art education and collecting. His work remained fundamentally connected to figurative painting, while progressively exploring simplification of form, chromatic construction, and a visual language approaching abstraction without abandoning the observable world.

Born in Bucharest in 1935, Grigore studied at the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest, graduating in 1959. Among his professors were Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna, Samuel Mützner, and Ion Marșic. In 1961, he received the Frederic and Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck Scholarship, an early recognition of his artistic development.

From 1961 to 2005, Grigore taught at the same institute, progressing through the academic ranks to become a university professor. His long teaching career placed him in direct dialogue with several generations of Romanian artists and made education an important dimension of his cultural legacy.

His artistic practice encompassed painting and drawing, with recurring subjects including still lifes, landscapes, interiors, portraits, and the human figure. Although rooted in figurative representation, his compositions reveal an interest in the essentialization and geometrization of forms. Color played a particularly important role in his work, with carefully constructed chromatic relationships giving his paintings their distinctive luminosity and compositional balance.

Grigore exhibited regularly from the late 1950s onward. He received numerous distinctions throughout his career, including the Union of Fine Artists Award for Painting in 1963, the Ion Andreescu Prize of the Romanian Academy in 1966, and an award for fine arts at the International Exhibition in Szczecin, Poland, in 1969. In 2002, he was awarded the National Order “Faithful Service,” Knight rank.

Alongside his career as an artist, Vasile Grigore was a passionate art collector. In 2003, he donated to the Romanian state a collection comprising approximately 600 works and objects, including Romanian and European painting, sculpture, graphic art, Oriental and Far Eastern art, ceramics, textiles, and decorative objects. This donation formed the basis of the “Vasile Grigore – Painter and Collector” Art Museum, which opened in Bucharest in 2004.

His legacy therefore extends beyond his own artistic production, encompassing decades of teaching and a significant collection assembled and ultimately made accessible to the public.
