Sorin Purcaru
(b. 23 June 1971, Iași, Romania)
Sorin Purcaru is a Romanian contemporary painter recognized for his expressive figurative compositions, rich chromatic language, and distinctive reinterpretation of traditional themes through a contemporary visual vocabulary. A prominent representative of the Iași artistic scene, his work combines elements of symbolism, mythology, folk culture, and personal narrative, creating complex pictorial worlds populated by human figures, animals, and recurring symbolic motifs.
Born in Iași in 1971, Purcaru studied at the “George Enescu” Academy of Arts in Iași, graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts. He later joined the institution as a professor, contributing significantly to the education of younger generations of artists while continuing to develop his own artistic practice.
His paintings are characterized by dynamic compositions, dense surfaces, and an intense dialogue between drawing and color. Drawing inspiration from Romanian cultural traditions, religious iconography, literature, and everyday life, Purcaru constructs visual narratives that oscillate between reality and imagination. Humor, irony, and a profound understanding of the human condition often coexist within his works.
Over the course of his career, he has exhibited extensively in Romania and internationally, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His works are included in important public and private collections and have established him as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Romanian painting.
Within the context of Pavot, Sorin Purcaru’s work resonates through its narrative richness, symbolic depth, and celebration of imagination, inviting viewers into a universe where tradition and contemporary sensibility coexist in a vibrant visual dialogue.
