Simion Cernica
(b. 1973, Bucharest, Romania)
Simion Cernica is a Romanian contemporary artist who has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 2011. His artistic practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, and performance, and is characterized by a conceptual and critical approach to contemporary social, cultural, and political realities.
Rejecting the traditional academic path of the 1990s, Cernica developed his own method of artistic research and inquiry, building a visual language influenced by contemporary culture, recent history, and the mechanisms through which society produces and consumes images, ideologies, and collective narratives.
His works investigate the relationship between the individual and dominant cultural systems, questioning accepted perspectives on reality, history, and identity. His practice is often described as subversive, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of Arte Povera and employing found objects, spatial interventions, and conceptual gestures to generate new meanings and contexts for interpretation.
Cernica has participated in numerous international exhibitions and projects, including those organized by Art Encounters Biennale, IOMO Gallery, the Romanian Cultural Institute, and galleries across Europe and the United States. His work establishes an ongoing dialogue between personal experience, collective memory, and the cultural transformations of the contemporary world.
