Maria Chelsoi Cristea

(1909, Bicaz, Neamț County, Romania – 1996, Bucharest, Romania)

Maria Chelsoi Cristea was a Romanian painter and ceramic artist whose practice encompassed painting, watercolor, ceramics, and religious art. Her work was closely connected to the Romanian landscape and to the visual culture of the places in which she lived and worked, with landscapes, flowers, still lifes, and architectural subjects recurring throughout her artistic production.

Born in Bicaz, Neamț County, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where her professors included Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck, Jean Alexandru Steriadi, Ipolit Strâmbu, and Gabriel Popescu. This academic training provided the foundation for a practice that combined drawing and painting with a sustained interest in decorative and applied arts.

An important chapter of her career was connected to Vălenii de Munte. In 1934, following the intervention of historian Nicolae Iorga, she joined the School of Forgotten Arts (Școala Artelor Uitate) within the Principesa Elena cultural establishment, where she taught ceramics. She remained in Vălenii de Munte until 1940, founded a ceramics workshop, and also taught courses at the local Summer University. During this period, she painted a number of views and buildings associated with the town, working in both oil and watercolor.

Her artistic activity extended beyond easel painting and ceramics to religious painting. Documentary records associate Maria Chelsoi with church decoration and restoration projects carried out during the latter part of the twentieth century, revealing another dimension of her engagement with traditional artistic techniques.

Chelsoi Cristea's works continue to appear in Romanian exhibitions and collections. Her paintings reveal a particular sensitivity to color and atmosphere, especially in landscapes and still lifes, positioning her practice within the broader development of Romanian figurative art during the twentieth century.
