Liviu Suhar

(b. 17 February 1943, Iacobeni, Suceava County, Romania)

Liviu Suhar is a Romanian painter and academic, widely recognized as a significant figure in Romanian post-war and contemporary art. He was born in 1943 in Iacobeni, Suceava County, and completed his artistic training at the “Octav Băncilă” Art High School in Iași and at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the “Ion Andreescu” Institute of Fine Arts in Cluj-Napoca, graduating in 1968.

Suhar’s work spans decades of continuous creative activity, with a prolific exhibition history that includes solo and group shows throughout Romania and internationally, in cities such as Lausanne, Madrid, Vienna, Budapest, Wolfsburg, and Venice. His paintings and drawings are held in national museums and private collections, reflecting an artistic language that combines sensitivity, poetic sentiment, and disciplined visual inquiry rooted in both tradition and modern expression.

In addition to his artistic practice, Suhar has had a long academic career at the George Enescu National University of Arts in Iași, where he served as a professor, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, and scientific secretary of the Senate. His contributions to art education and theory have shaped generations of Romanian artists.

Throughout his career, Suhar has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the Silver Medal at the Kosice Painting Biennial (1984) and the National Order Serviciul Credincios at the rank of Knight.

Within the context of Pavot, Liviu Suhar’s work resonates with sustained exploration of form, color, emotion, and cultural memory—where painting becomes both a personal testimony and a poetic engagement with life.
