Ion Grigorescu

Ion Grigorescu

Ion Grigorescu is a Romanian artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, photography, film, performance, and conceptual art. A seminal figure in Romanian contemporary art, he is known for his deeply introspective and critical approach, in which personal experience intersects with social, political, and spiritual inquiry.

His work often addresses themes of identity, the body, everyday life, and the relationship between the individual and ideology. Moving fluidly between media, Grigorescu employs a raw, direct visual language that resists spectacle, favoring authenticity, vulnerability, and ethical questioning. The body—frequently his own—becomes both subject and instrument of reflection.

Ion Grigorescu studied at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest and has exhibited extensively in Romania and internationally. His works are included in major museum collections and have been presented at important international exhibitions, contributing significantly to the recognition of Eastern European conceptual and performance-based practices.

Within the context of Pavot, Ion Grigorescu’s work resonates through its emphasis on interior truth, gesture, and the essential act of making—where art becomes a form of witness, presence, and personal inscription.
