Cathrin Hoffmann

Cathrin Hoffmann

(b. 1984, Germany)

Cathrin Hoffmann is a German-Iranian contemporary artist based in Berlin, working across painting, sculpture, and installation. Her practice explores the challenges of human existence in the post-digital age, addressing themes such as identity, alienation, technology, climate anxiety, and the shifting relationship between the physical body and digital experience.

Central to Hoffmann’s work is the question of what becomes of humanity when lived experience increasingly moves into virtual space. Her paintings often depict distorted, anthropomorphic figures that oscillate between mechanical forms and organic bodies, creating a visual language that is simultaneously vulnerable, unsettling, and deeply human. Through these hybrid figures, she examines the tensions between embodiment, technology, and contemporary culture.

A self-taught artist, Hoffmann combines digital aesthetics with tactile materials and painterly gestures. Smooth gradients and virtual-looking surfaces coexist with rough textures and expressive brushwork, blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Her work draws inspiration from artists such as Egon Schiele and Francis Bacon, particularly in their treatment of the human figure as a site of psychological and emotional inquiry.

Hoffmann has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the United States, and Asia, including exhibitions with König Galerie, Nicodim Gallery, Public Gallery London, Christine König Galerie, and institutions such as X Museum (Beijing), Museu Inimá de Paula (Brazil), and Buxton Contemporary (Australia). Her works are held in prominent public and private collections worldwide.
