Agathe Toman

AGATHE TOMAN is a Franco-Austrian and Czech artist born in 1989.

A painter and draughtswoman, she also works with photography and poetry.

She studied at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne before working for several years as a fashion designer within haute couture houses. At the age of twenty-five, she left fashion to devote herself entirely to her artistic practice. She now lives and works in Seignosse.

Her work has progressively developed around perception, inner experience, and the forms it can take.

Painting, drawing, photography and writing constitute different territories within the same enquiry. 

Her series Les Invisibles, FLUIDS, Bleues, VOID, and later La Forêt, trace the successive shifts within this exploration.
Matter, repetition, saturation, landscape and the body emerge as different ways of investigating what takes shape before it can even be named. 

Since 2020, she has pursued parallel studies in psychoanalysis, transactional analysis and psychopathology. Her clinical practice, conducted between 2025 and 2026, shifted part of her enquiry towards processes of perception, transformation and relation. 

In 2026, she was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder — Asperger syndrome — a diagnosis that retrospectively shed light on her relationship to perception, intensity and repetition.

Since 2025, Agathe Toman has been represented in France by Mala Gallery on a non-exclusive basis.

Her work was presented at DDessin in 2018 and 2019, and subsequently at Art Paris Art Fair in 2019 and 2026.

Between 2021 and 2023, several of her works were offered at auction at Sotheby’s in Paris and Cologne.

In 2025, the BIC Foundation acquired one of her drawings for its collection. Her works are also held in several private collections in France and internationally.

Poetry has accompanied her practice from the outset. In 2025, she published You Will Have to Learn to Smile Again, her first collection of poetry in English. 

A second, bilingual French-English collection is currently in preparation.
