About the artist
Mitsushige Nishiwaki, born in May 1973, is a self-trained artist whose etchings depict various aspects of metropolitan environments. His choice of subject matter arose from his early European travels embarked upon with a Japanese industrial company. Mitsushige graduated from the University of Tokyo and later studied in Arizona receiving a graduate degree in Graphic Design from Collins College, Arizona, USA. Further developing his skills as a graphic designer in New York City, Mitsushige has now returned to Tokyo, producing humorous images of Europe and the United States. Each print is unique and playful offering an outsider’s perspective of seemingly mundane setting.
Derived from street scenes of Paris, New York and London, Mitsushige Nishiwaki’s spirited etchings offer an imaginative use of iconic urban scenery characterized by their seemingly naive, innocent, “outsider art” point of view.. His etching technique is textured and bold, yet the art has a delicate and a whimsical facility about them. Beginning in 2009, and self taught in intaglio, Mitsushige Nishiwaki’s etchings are on copperplate. For highlighted color, he etches on plastic so as to intensify the color. His larger works are made up of a series of abutting small print-plate sizes, providing a visible armature for the artwork.
